One Farm, Five Different Soils: How We Prepare Land for Each Xina Enterprise
It’s tempting to think of “land preparation” as one job — clear it, level it, plant it. Across 71.47 hectares carrying six very different enterprises, that approach would fail almost everywhere it was tried. Greenhouse vegetables, rice-fish-duck paddies, coconut orchards, and livestock pens each need the land prepared differently, because each one asks something different of the soil beneath it. Here’s how Xina Integrated Farm approaches land prep, zone by zone.
Reading the Land First
Before any amendment plan was written, the estate was surveyed in detail: 39 GPS boundary waypoints captured by digital total station, cross-referenced against SRTM and 5-metre resolution LIDAR elevation data. That survey found a site ranging from 14.8 to 21.8 metres above sea level, sloping gently from north to south at just 0.295% — enough for fully gravity-fed drainage across the entire estate, with no pumping required for stormwater evacuation. That single finding shaped almost everything downstream: where water naturally wants to go determined where each enterprise was placed, long before a planting plan existed.
Combined with the IITA soil laboratory results across all 10 zones, this gave the project two independent data sets — topography and soil chemistry — that, reassuringly, told the same story. Here’s how that translated into land prep for each enterprise.
The Bigger Picture
Land preparation rarely makes it into the highlight reel of an agribusiness project — but it’s where a 71-hectare farm either succeeds or quietly underperforms for years. By treating each enterprise’s land as its own problem to solve, rather than applying one generic playbook across the whole estate, Xina is building from a foundation that’s been tested, not assumed.
